My 2008 Watchlist…

January 3, 2008

A lot of goodies are in store for anime lovers this 2008. I personally find some of them to be repetitive of the stuff that I’ve watched before and others simply seem to be boring. But among the line-up this year the following caught my interest:

1. Ponyo on a Cliff: Another film from Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki this year. The movie is about a goldfish princess named Ponyo who desperately wants to be a human. In pursuing her goal, she befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sosuke (wikipedia). Knowing it’s from Ghibli and Miyazaki, I’d expect that this will be good. The story might go in the line of Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro – simple but with much deeper plot, consistent characters, and good story development. I always feel that Ghibli’s usual watercolor-like animation adds nostalgia and a general feeling of happiness to the whole film. I don’t know why but I always feel happy after watching a Ghibli film regardless of the story/plot.

Early Christmas Greeting

December 19, 2007

I’m doing this early Christmas greeting cuz I’ll be traveling to my hometown on the 21st. I don’t have internet access there so I won’t be around until the 26th or the 30th at the latest. I guess I’ll just build some pepakura to kill some time  ^^. So now let me thank from the bottom of my heart all the good people who have graced this blog with their wonderful comments (Coeli, AS, super rats, Setsuna-san, Lanie-emon, Tokidoki and BigN) and all others who spared some time to visit here. You guys are the best, Arigatou gosaimas!

Let me wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too! I’m now giving you the Christmas star above from the cast of Lucky Star courtesy of Ash-Hikari.

 Yours truly,

Shinji ^_^

Miku Hatsune Pepakura in B & W

December 14, 2007

This is my first attempt on pepakura/papercraft so please don’t hate me if it looks horrible. Why black & white? Well I ran out of colored ink but the eager-beaver in me forced me to print the pattern on a laser printer at my office. Besides I need some practice before wasting any precious colored ink. After lots of cutting, folding and gluing I present to you my first Miku Hatsuna pepakura.

Based on the info I googled, Miku is the character behind a singing software which simulates/synthesizes voices. I just don’t know how that actually works.

Going back to the figure, I downloaded the pdo file from Michael James’ site (really cool site) and ran it on the pepakura viewer to get the spread out pattern. This build is just small with only 3 pages of parts which turn into a 4-inch figure.

1/144 Serpent Custom Bootleg

December 7, 2007

I found this bootleg in a local store and for a cheap price bought it thinking it’s a good kit to practice with and a source of extra caps. I’m no experienced builder so it still took me several hours to build the thing. After snipping and attaching the last piece, I was really surprised that, for a china-made product, the model really looks like a serpent custom.

The box comes with the usual sprues, stickers, and a brochure/building guide. The front of the brochure contains the story of the serpent as it appeared in the anime and some cool pictures of the original serpent. The guide is found at the back with the usual image guide as in the original Bandai. The brochure, however, is written in Chinese and English. I had fun reading the story captions below several anime screenshots. The model comes with two weapons: a double gatling gun and a beam cannon (my favorite). There are also two pairs of hands: one open palm for holding the barrel of the cannon (see pix) and another to hold the gatling gun (forgot to shoot it).

My Top 5 Anime

December 5, 2007

Based on the anime I’ve watched so far, here are the best 5 for me:

5. Ranma ½: Saotome Ranma, a teenage martial artist, and his father Genma travel to the ‘cursed training ground’ of Jusenkyo in China. There, despite the warnings of the Chinese guard, they fall into the cursed springs. From now on, whenever Ranma is doused in cold water, he turns in to a girl, and a cute, well-built red-head at that. Hot water changes him back into a man again, but only until the next time. To make matters worse, his father engages him to Tendo Akane, a girl who hates boys.

Thoughts: Welcome to the world of anything-goes-martial-arts. This is one of the funniest and entertaining anime I’ve watched. Storyline and characters are unique and really amusing. It’s something I’d watch anytime after a hard day at work.
